Summary

While there have always been fashions--and the fashionable--it is only since the advent of modern mass manufacturing, advertising, and distribution that fashion has been available to the 'average' consumer. This video examines how Paris became the capital of fashion, home to the biggest designers from around the world. Drawing on biographical information, interviews, and comments provided by fashion journalists, executives, and designers, this video is an introduction to the designers who have shaped fashion from Paris, creating and molding international haute couture. Featured designers include Coco Chanel, Paul Poiret, Jacques Fath, Elsa Schiaparelli, Cristobal Balenciaga, Hubert de Givenchy, Emanuel Ungaro, Andre Courreges, Pierre Cardin, and Thierry Mugler.
